REDUCE LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT

Rising unemployment among the local population has alarmed the public which urged relevant authority to start looking at local talents and capabilities as their sources of workforces.
Dr Hj Mohd Hatta urged local industries to review their option and start employ local as “it is their social obligation to play a role in reducing rising and continuous unemployment amongst the local people.
He specifically mentioned hospitality, manufacturing and retail industries such as garment factories and supermarkets as sources of employment for the unemployed locals and these sectors must review their policies and start employing locals.
The unemployment situation here remains a considerable concern and unless SME and private companies review their policies the growth of new unemployment opportunities in the public sectors is not sufficient to absorb school dropouts, university graduates and new entrants to the local market.
It is the duty of the industries to provide training to absorb local people into their workforces, these industries should be able to absorb the unemployed local as they need large workforces, currently being filled up by foreign workers.
In a research conducted, some 70 to 85% of foreign workers had been engaged to work in hotels, garment factories, supermarkets and private companies. Unemployment is estimated above 6000 and is expected to increase annually and would burden the nation if not rectified.
The reasons such as the local have been very selective and would not work for lower salaries and not to work extra and longer times should not be capitalized by the industries and private companies but most importantly those industries and private companies must show responsibilities by providing incentives, training and guidance as well as opportunities to be able to attract local workforces.
I hope that the relevant authorities can implement and make compulsory a quota system for relevant sectors and these industries must employ a certain number of locals before they are permitted to employ foreign workers.
With such system I do believe the national unemployment problems could be handle if not solved. I urged the relevant agency not to allow for the renewal of foreign works term contract so that the vacancies could be filled up by locals. Similarly retiring civil servants should not be allowed to continue their services so unemployed local could fill up the vacancies.
There are solutions for every issue if all relevant parties sit down to discuss the matters.

BRUNEI ISLAMIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Brunei Darussalam should now establish Islamic Chamber of Commerce to serve and strengthen the unite among the Malay business people in the country which is based on the concept of Melayu Islam Beraja.

I had attended the international business convention overseas with the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Commodity Exchange (ICCICE), where the ICCICE had pointed out the role of the organization is promoting the economic cooperation and industry integration among the Islamic business people of the OIC member states.
The industrial cooperation has been an integral part of cooperation efforts of the member states which aims at strengthening economic cooperation and accorded priority to the promotion of joint venture in various areas including food and agriculture, trade, industry and marketing.

It initiated the process of promoting joint ventures among the O.I.C.. members states, whereby the Islamic Development Bank together with the Islamic Chamber of Commerce (ICCICE) would play a catalytic role in such a mechanism.

Through the investment Co-operative Programme, the Islamic Chamber of Commerce seeks to render promotional, advisory information and other services to the member states.

These services are provided by promoting, encouraging, facilitating increased trade and investment Promotion Meetings.

The Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry provides information on the project sponsors in Less Develop Countries and potential partners in Advance Developed Country and creates a framework of contract between them..

The Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry was initiated and formed among the influence Arabs business people in Saudi Arabia and other Arab business people in the O.I.C. member states.

The Headquarters of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry is based in Pakistan.

The forming of the Brunei Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry in the country will help the Brunei Malay businessmen become the member of ICCICE and could participate in the investment Co-operative Programme, trade meetings (import/export) and establish joint venture among the Arab business people from the Arab member states.

BUSINESS PEOPLE SHOULD PUT ASIDE DIFFERENCES

CHAMBERS of commerce, business associations and businessmen should put aside differences and find ways to solve disputes and unhealthy competition among the Malay, local and non local businessmen & businesswomen.

I urge the business people in the country to solve the differences which hinder future cooperation and relation.

They should seek negotiate solutions and not let the differences which cannot be settled stand in the way of the future unity and cooperation.

Number of SME s are now out of business and loafing at the coffee shops, due to the unhealthy competition and differences among themselves..

Although the Government had made every effort to encourage Malay local businessmen and businesswomen to take the opportunity by participating in government projects and national development programme, the business leaders should think positively and act wisely by working closely, and giving a clear picture and correct information on the current business activities and potential markets to help their associations members.
